The biggest travel trends 2027 has to offer are not about going farther. They are about going more often, feeling better and worrying less about getting every detail right. That is the common thread in three of the most anticipated forecasts of the season, the Hilton 2027 Trends Report, Booking.com 2027 Travel Predictions and Skyscanner Travel Trends 2027.
Here are the eight shifts that will shape how people plan, pack and spend their time off next year.

1. Micro trips replace the one big vacation
Instead of saving everything for a single long holiday, travelers are taking shorter, more frequent getaways that fit around real life. Hilton calls it the micro travel mindset and found that one in four travelers plan trips this way to work around their jobs, while 29% do it simply for the spontaneity.
A long weekend in a nearby city, a two night escape to the coast, a quick stop in a second town on the way home. Smaller trips, more often, with less pressure on each one.
2. The plot twist trip
Booking.com found that 77% of travelers are interested in a trip that is completely out of character, and 36% want to surprise friends and family with their choice. Think of the beach lover who books a mountain retreat, or the planner who finally says yes to a trip with no itinerary at all.
3. Choosing a destination by mood
The question is shifting from “where should I go” to “how do I want to feel”. According to Booking.com, 81% would choose a destination based on how they want to feel, and 76% would use a mood based recommendation tool to help them decide. Calm, energized, inspired or simply rested, the feeling comes first and the map comes second.
4. Good ish beats perfect
After years of over planned, over photographed holidays, many travelers are letting go. Hilton describes the rise of “ish”, the idea that a trip does not have to be flawless to be great. In its research, 28% of travelers are figuring things out as they go, compared with 18% who want a fixed itinerary.

5. Gym cations
Fitness is joining the itinerary. Skyscanner points to a growing number of travelers who look for quality hotel gyms, local fitness classes and protein rich food while they are away. It even shapes where people sleep, with 66% of Americans more likely to book a hotel that offers a nutritious breakfast.
Booking.com sees the same energy among solo travelers, with 66% saying a shared physical activity on a trip led to a lasting connection.
6. Going off the grid
Skyscanner calls it signal severance, choosing remote places and switching off wifi and devices on purpose. Among the travelers it surveyed, 62% feel closer to nature when they log off and 58% say they connect better with the people they love. For anyone who spends the year answering messages, a weekend without a signal is quickly becoming a luxury in itself.
7. Currency chasers
Money is shaping the map. Skyscanner found that 41% of Americans have switched vacation destinations to get a more favorable exchange rate, a number that climbs to 72% among Gen Z travelers. Expect more trips to places where a budget stretches further without giving up comfort.
8. Wellness moves outdoors
Wellness travel is becoming less about spa menus and more about fresh air. Hilton reports that 79% of travelers say the outdoors is essential to relaxation, and more than half spend more time in nature on holiday than they do at home. It connects with a bigger idea we explored in our piece on why sleep, movement and recovery matter more than any wellness trend.
What these trends mean for your next trip
The common message of 2027 is simple. Travel is becoming more personal and less performative. A few ways to put that into practice:
- Plan shorter, plan sooner. Two or three long weekends can bring more rest than one exhausting two week trip.
- Start with a feeling. Decide whether you want calm, adventure or connection before you pick the destination.
- Leave room for the unplanned. Book the essentials and let the rest of the day happen.
- Protect real time offline. Even a few hours without your phone changes how a trip feels.
- Let the budget guide you. Comparing exchange rates can open destinations you had not considered.
As we wrote about the new luxury lifestyle, living better is no longer about doing more. In 2027, that applies to how we travel too.
